Irrigation: Commonly Asked
Questions Q: Do I need irrigation?
A: It depends. There are many plants that do well on
the Outer Banks without irrigation.
Xeriscaping,
or low water landscaping, is quite popular.
However, Southern Scapes
recommends the installation of an irrigation system to help ensure
the survival of plantings. All plants and lawns need water to
get established, even if they have low water requirements. The
installation of an irrigation system ensures proper watering and
greatly expands the type of plantings that can be installed in a
landscape.
Q: What is better, Hunter or Rainbird irrigation products?
A: Both companies make superior commercial grade irrigation
products. We prefer to use
Hunter Irrigation Products for its ease of use and durability. For most projects,
Southern Scapes uses Hunter PGP rotor heads and pop-up sprays with a
Hunter Pro-C Indoor/Outdoor timer with LED display.
Q: Will the system be easy to operate once it is installed?
A: Southern Scapes uses a manifold irrigation system.
With this system all of the valves are together and located within
feet of the irrigation timer, making repairs and service simple.
The Hunter Pro-C timer is extremely user-friendly with directions
posted directly within the case and it has an easy-to-read LED display.
Q: How often do I need an irrigation system serviced?
A: We recommend at least two main services a year.
First, we recommend that every system be winterized to prevent
winter damage. Then, Southern Scapes recommends a spring
service that includes turning the irrigation system back on,
adjusting all the heads, and replacing any broken or missing heads.
Weekly checks of your systems are very important as well to ensure
that it is properly watering your lawn and plantings and is one of
just a few services you will receive when you chose Southern Scapes
for your maintenance as well.
